France has decided to suspend financing and provision of assistance for the development of Burkina Faso over support of rebels in Niger by the African country, according to a statement released on the website of the French foreign ministry.

"France suspends until further notice all its operations on providing aid for the purpose of developing and providing budget support to Burkina Faso," the statement reads.

Military rebels in Niger carried out a coup on July 26, resulting in the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from office.

The rebels took decisive actions by closing national borders, imposing a curfew, suspending the constitution, and instituting a ban on political parties.

On July 28, the rebels declared General Abdourahmane Tchiani as the new head of state. During the coup, Tchiani, who was leading the presidential guard, personally apprehended President Bazoum, and the latter remains under the control of the seizing units.

Furthermore, the mutineers displayed their determination by denouncing military agreements with France regarding the stationing of French military units in Niger and the status of troops engaged in combating Jihadist groups.

In response to the crisis, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) swiftly condemned the coup.

ECOWAS demanded the restoration of constitutional order within a week and warned that measures, including potential military intervention, could be taken should the rebels fail to comply.

On July 31, Burkina Faso and Mali stood in solidarity with the people of Niger, expressing support for their neighboring nation during this precarious situation.
