To support Lebanon, France's ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Paris will convene an international meeting this Wednesday, Dec. 11, with the aim to push Beirut to quickly create a government that could restore the economic situation in the country.

Reuters quoted ministry spokeswoman Agnes von der Muhll saying: "This meeting should enable the international community to call for the rapid formation of an effective and credible government, which takes the necessary decisions to restore the economic situation and meets the aspirations expressed by the Lebanese people." The meeting aims as well to mobilize support for the country.

Lebanon has been through a serious political crisis since October 17th, when a massive protest movement took place, asking for the removal of the ruling political elite and the regime which is based on sectarian calculations.

During the crisis, Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad El-Hariri had to resign and since then, the political establishment was unable to assign a new prime minister.

Few days ago, El-Hariri appealed to friendly states to help his country imports essential goods as it grapples with an acute economic crisis.

A new government is seen as a crucial step for Lebanon to chart a way out of the crisis and appeal for the help of foreign governments waiting for the new administration to take shape.

Hariri, running a caretaker government, issued his appeal to Saudi Arabia, France, Russia, Turkey, the United States, China, and Egypt, seeking help to finance imports of essential goods.

According to Reuters, the crisis is rooted state waste and corruption overseen by leaders using government resources for their own gain. Lebanon is one of the world’s most heavily indebted states.

Lebanon won international pledges of more than $11 billion in project financing last year on condition reforms are enacted.
