At least four police officers were seriously injured in a car bomb explosion in the "central" state of Guanajuato, one of the most violent regions in Mexico, authorities said on Thursday.

The officers were members of the National Guard - a police force under the control of the army - and fell to the ground when the car they were inspecting exploded in the Silao area. One of the four officers lost his right arm, according to the prosecutor's office.

Diego Sinhue Rodriguez, the governor of Guanajuato state, said a total of four people were taken to hospital.

He said the investigation is focusing on whether the police officers were lured to the car through a fake phone call.

This year, 14 police officers have been killed in Silao and 32 in total in Guanajuato state, according to official figures.

Guanajuato state, a tourist and industrial area, was the most violent in Mexico last year, with more than 3,000 murders recorded.

Guanajuato is witnessing a conflict between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (the most powerful in Mexico) and Santa Rosa de Lima.
