Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was transferred by medical aircraft to Brasília on Saturday after being hospitalized for abdominal pain during a trip to northeastern Brazil.
Bolsonaro was admitted to a hospital on Friday morning, where doctors diagnosed him with an intestinal blockage linked to complications from a stabbing attack he suffered in September 2018.
Since the attack, Bolsonaro has faced repeated hospitalizations and undergone several surgeries during and after his presidency from 2019 to 2022.
In a social media post, Bolsonaro stated that he had grown accustomed to the pain over the years but noted that doctors considered this episode more serious than previous ones.
He indicated that he might require another surgery, although physicians from Rio Grande Hospital in Rio Grande do Norte said he was stable and did not need emergency surgery. Further treatment will depend on his recovery.
Doctors also confirmed that Bolsonaro’s transfer to Brasília was requested by his family.
