Youssef Al Salem, the former player of Al Hilal Saudi Club, passed away at the age of 37 after suffering from illness.

Al Salem was transferred into intensive care in a hospital due to a sudden illness last January, the club announced on Sunday.

The club said it would make sure to secure all the medical requirements for the player to receive the proper treatment.

Al Salem was on his way to perform training with his current team, Al Jubail, one of the third-division teams. Later on, he felt very ill and called on one of his friends to take him to the hospital.

The player lost consciousness and was then transferred from Jubail Hospital to Dammam, in accordance with both the Saudi Ministry of Sports and the management of Al Hilal Club.

The tragic news came hours after the Saudi club was defeated by Real Madrid in the Club World Cup Final Saturday night.

Real Madrid beat Al Hilal 5-3 at the Moulay Abdallah stadium in Rabat and was crowned the title for the fifth time in its history.
