AIK, one of Sweden’s leading football clubs, announced on Friday the appointment of Portuguese coach José Ribeiro, formerly of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, as the team’s new head coach.
Ribeiro will lead the club until December 31, 2028.
The 48-year-old coach, who has previously managed clubs in Finland, Spain, and South Africa, joined AIK following his tenure at Al Ahly.
He will officially begin his duties at the start of the team’s training camp in Spain.
In a statement, AIK emphasized that Ribeiro was chosen after an extensive search for a coach who aligns with the club’s playing style and strong cultural values.
“José is the perfect choice on both fronts,” the club said.
“His deep understanding of modern football, player development, and his personal values fit seamlessly with our club environment.”
Ribeiro expressed his excitement about the new role, saying, “I am proud and thrilled to join a club that lives and breathes football.
AIK has a strong identity, high ambitions, and passionate supporters. I am eager to start working, build strong relationships, and collaborate closely with players and staff to develop the team daily, elevating it both individually and collectively.”
The appointment marks a new chapter for AIK as they aim to strengthen their squad and compete at the highest level in Swedish football under Ribeiro’s guidance.
