Former Al Ahly defender Ayman Ashraf has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career marked by major domestic and continental success.

Speaking on MBC Masr 2 television channel, Ashraf said the decision followed a long period of reflection that lasted around six months, adding that he reached his final decision only four days ago.

“Retirement was not a sudden step,” Ashraf said. “It came after deep thinking and a comprehensive review of my football journey and everything I have given over the years. Stepping away from football is one of the most difficult decisions any player can make, especially since the game represented my entire life.”

The former Al Ahly center-back and right-back explained that he chose to end his career out of respect for himself and his history in the game, rather than continuing under circumstances he felt did not reflect his contributions. He revealed that he had received several offers from different clubs in recent months but deemed them unsuitable for his career legacy.

Ashraf expressed pride in his achievements, both individually and collectively, particularly with Al Ahly, where he enjoyed the most successful period of his career. He credited the club’s supporters as a key factor behind his success and popularity, describing their support as one of the greatest gains of his football journey.

“I am completely satisfied with my decision,” he said. “I am grateful to everyone who supported me throughout my career. The next phase will be a new beginning outside the pitch after many years of commitment and dedication.”

During his career, Ashraf won the CAF Champions League three times, the CAF Super Cup twice, the Egyptian Premier League on six occasions, the Egypt Cup once, and the Egyptian Super Cup once. At the international level, he earned 32 caps for Egypt and was part of the Pharaohs’ squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
