An experimental cancer drug appears to have cured every patient in a small clinical trial conducted in the United States of America (USA).

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that all 12 patients diagnosed with rectal cancer went into a recovery period after taking “dustarlimb” over a period of 6 months, according to the Independent,  a UK daily newspaper.

"This is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer," Dr. Luis Diaz, one of the lead authors of the research and an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, told the New York Times.

The patients also did not experience any significant side effects during treatment, although it is believed that not enough people participated in the study, to highlight the various adverse reactions that the drug can cause.

Despite their enthusiasm for the research, the scientists said the promising results should be replicated, and cautioned against concluding that cancer had been eradicated.
