FM, UN Envoy Discuss Sudan Crisis on Sidelines of AU Summit

Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Repatriates of Egypt, met on Saturday, February 14, with Ramtane Lamamra, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, on the sidelines of his participation in the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. 

At the outset of the meeting, Abdelatty reaffirmed the fundamental principles of Egypt's position regarding the Sudanese crisis, which are based on supporting Sudan's unity and territorial integrity, preserving national state institutions, and rejecting any attempts to undermine its sovereignty, partition it, or establish parallel entities. 

He also emphasized support for a temporary humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire, thereby creating the necessary conditions for a transitional process that fulfills the Sudanese people’s aspirations for security, stability, and development.

​Moreover, Abdelatty praised the level of coordination with the UN Envoy and their shared positions in support of the Sudanese state against threats to its security and stability. 

In this context, he commended the outcomes of the Fifth Consultative Meeting for Coordinating Peace Efforts hosted by Cairo on January 14, 2026, which served as a successful model of cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations in supporting the political settlement process. 

FM expressed his appreciation for the UN Envoy's intensive efforts and communications to address the crisis, affirming Egypt's readiness to provide all necessary support to ensure the success of his endeavors aimed at formulating serious and sustainable solutions, while noting Cairo’s pride in its close and continuous coordination with the United Nations on this file.

​The meeting also reviewed the results of communications conducted by Egypt within the framework of the Quartet Mechanism, where views were exchanged on ways to break the current stalemate and advance the political track.

Additionally, they assessed developments related to mobilizing humanitarian funding, including the recent meeting in Washington, and discussed the upcoming steps regarding the Sudanese file.
