At least five people were killed on Sunday when an old residential building collapsed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, according to state media, as rescue teams continued searching the rubble for possible survivors.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that the collapse occurred in the Bab al-Tabbaneh district. Eight people were rescued, while five victims—including a child and an elderly woman—were recovered from the debris.
Authorities evacuated nearby residential buildings as a precaution amid fears of further collapses. Local television footage showed residents and rescue workers removing rubble with limited equipment, at times using their bare hands to search for survivors.
The incident comes just weeks after another building collapse in Tripoli, underscoring concerns over aging structures and safety standards in parts of the city.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun ordered emergency services to remain on high alert to support rescue operations and instructed authorities to provide shelter for residents displaced from the collapsed building and neighboring properties evacuated as a safety measure, according to a statement from the presidency.
