Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi announced the start of initial gas production from the West El Burullus field in the Mediterranean Sea, marking a new milestone in Egypt’s efforts to boost domestic gas output.
According to a ministry statement issued today, the field’s first well has been successfully connected to the national gas grid following production tests indicating nearly 45 million cubic feet per day. The project is being developed in partnership between the petroleum sector and Cheiron Energy.
Badawi added that work is underway to accelerate the connection of two additional wells, which is expected to raise the field’s output to 75 million cubic feet per day at the beginning of the new year.
The minister highlighted the extensive efforts by the petroleum sector and its international partners to steadily increase natural gas production and ease the burden of import costs. This includes fast-tracking the development of newly discovered fields and intensifying exploration programs, supported by the ministry’s investment incentives that have clearly impacted production levels.
Badawi praised Cheiron Energy’s commitment and growing cooperation in implementing the project, stressing that such partnerships are essential to sustaining the sector’s momentum and meeting rising domestic energy needs.
