First black woman wins Miss Universe Great Britain 2018

SEE-July21st: Athlete Dee-Ann Kentish Rogers is the first black skinned dreadlocked woman to be crowned Miss Universe Great Britain on Saturday,July14 after 66 years since the pageant started.

The 25-year-old Rogers lives in Birmingham, but she is originally from Anguilla, a British overseas territory .

She competed against 40 women from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and British overseas territory .

She believes that winning the pageant is such an achievement saying, “I am extremely proud of myself for this achievement”, she continues “especially in this post-Brexit and Windrush period.”

Her number one dream was to be an Olympic heptathlete, competed at the Commonwealth Games on two occasions. Due to a knee injury she couldn’t achieve this dream.

"Miss Universe Great Britain was the pageant equivalent of becoming an Olympic athlete for Great Britain.", Rogers said .

In addition to being an athlete, she studied law in University of Birmingham, and passed her final exams in June.

In the past couple of years beauty standards started to change rapidly, beauty has no size nor a certain skintone. ''Beauty standards are changing and it is an exciting time for all

women of all backgrounds'', Rogers added.

She aims to represent all women, and change how young girls think of themselves. She also wants to change the future beauty industry.
