Day 8 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 delivered a dramatic slate of matches, with Switzerland, Canada, and Mexico all securing crucial victories as the group stage continued to take shape.
Across three continents, teams battled for control of their groups, producing decisive scorelines, late drama, and moments that will shape the knockout race.
Switzerland produced one of the most commanding performances of the day, sweeping aside Bosnia and Herzegovina 4–1 at SoFi Stadium.
After a tightly contested opening hour, Johan Manzambi broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, before Switzerland capitalised on Bosnia’s defensive collapse following a red card.
Rubén Vargas and Breel Embolo added further pressure, and Granit Xhaka sealed the result from the penalty spot.
Bosnia managed a late consolation goal in stoppage time, but the Swiss dominance had already been fully established.
Canada, meanwhile, delivered the performance of the day with a ruthless 6–0 demolition of Qatar in Vancouver.
Jonathan David stole the headlines with a stunning hat-trick, leading a Canadian side that was in complete control from start to finish.
Qatar’s night unravelled early after two red cards reduced them to nine men, allowing Canada to dominate possession and territory. Cyle Larin and others added to the scoring as the hosts moved to the brink of qualification for the knockout stages.
Mexico also maintained their perfect start with a narrow but important 1–0 win over South Korea to top Group A. Luis Romo scored the decisive goal early in the second half after a goalkeeping error, finishing a loose ball inside the box.
Mexico’s defence then held firm under pressure, frustrating South Korea and securing all three points. The result not only guaranteed progression to the knockout stage but also ensured Mexico finished top of their group.
Elsewhere, Switzerland’s victory strengthened their position at the top of their group, while Canada’s emphatic win sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament.
Mexico’s disciplined performance further highlighted their growing confidence as one of the most balanced sides in the competition so far.
Day 8 ultimately belonged to the teams that combined efficiency with control. Switzerland’s late surge, Canada’s attacking explosion, and Mexico’s defensive resilience all underscored a shifting balance in the tournament as the race for the knockout stage intensifies.
