The Iraqi Football Association has revealed that FIFA will hold an official meeting with the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran later next week to make a final decision regarding Iran national football team participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to a source within the Iraqi federation speaking to Shafaq News Agency, the official response from the Iranian side will be decisive in determining the fate of the Iraq national football team.
The outcome could either see Iraq qualify directly for the World Cup or enter the playoff stage if Iran confirms its continued participation.
The upcoming meeting comes amid heightened anticipation across the region, as Iran’s decision could significantly reshape the qualification landscape for the global tournament.
Meanwhile, Mehr News Agency reported that Iranian authorities have set a key condition for their participation in the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to the report, Iran has requested formal security guarantees from FIFA and the host nations before confirming its participation.
Officials stressed that the involvement of the national team, commonly known as “Team Melli,” would depend on assurances that players and staff can train and compete under FIFA supervision without security concerns.
The tournament draw placed the Iran national football team in Group G alongside Belgium national football team, Egypt national football team, and New Zealand national football team.
Should Iran ultimately withdraw from the competition, FIFA would be forced to quickly find a replacement to fill the vacant spot in the global tournament.
