Fifa has confirmed on Saturday that Liverpool have the right in preventing the iconic Egyptian star Mohamed Salah from participating in the 2020 Olympic games during the upcoming summer.
Egypt's U-23 national team managed to qualify for the Olympic games, to be held in Tokyo after claiming the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
"The men’s Olympic Football Tournament, as well as all FIFA competitions with age restrictions, are not included in the men’s international match calendar 2018-2024, and thus clubs are not under the obligation to release players for the competition," a spokesperson in Fifa told SunSport.
The Pharaohs' u-23 head coach Shawky Gharib had expressed his interest in choosing Mo Salah as one of three over-age players for the tournament, which is set to take place from the end of July into the first two weeks of August.
