Gianni Infantino has urged fans and critics to “chill” amid growing concerns over ticket prices and visa-related issues ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking at a press conference in Mexico City ahead of the tournament opener, Infantino defended FIFA’s handling of logistical challenges, insisting that the organisation does not have full control over government and border-related decisions.

He acknowledged the unfortunate case of Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was reportedly denied entry into the United States despite being selected for the tournament, calling the situation “unfortunate” while stressing FIFA’s limited authority in such matters.

Infantino also addressed criticism surrounding visa delays affecting some teams, including Iran, which has faced travel complications and relocation of training bases in the build-up to the tournament.

In his remarks, Infantino said FIFA continuously attempts to resolve issues but emphasized the limits of its influence:

“We try to solve everything… but we are not the kings of the world who can rule over governments.”

He further encouraged stakeholders to remain calm and trust FIFA’s efforts to ensure smooth tournament operations.

The FIFA president also defended the high cost of match tickets, stating that average prices are comparable to major sporting events in North America, with some averaging around $500 (USD).

The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to begin this week, marking the first edition featuring 48 teams and an expanded match format.
