Turkish giants Fenerbahçe announced on Friday the dismissal of Portuguese coach José Mourinho following the team’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
In an official statement published on the club’s account on “X,” Fenerbahçe said: “We have parted ways with José Mourinho, who has been head coach of our professional football team since the 2024-2025 season. We thank him for his efforts and wish him success in his future career.”
The decision came after Fenerbahçe were knocked out of the competition by Benfica, who secured their place in the group stage with a 1-0 win in Istanbul thanks to a 35th-minute strike from Muhammed Kerem Aktürkoğlu.
With the first leg ending goalless, Benfica advanced while Mourinho’s European campaign with the Turkish side ended at the first hurdle.
The setback also means the veteran manager will miss out on the Champions League for the sixth consecutive season.
Mourinho has previously expressed his strong desire to return to Portugal, either to take charge of a domestic club or the national team.
