Egypt's Dar al-Iftaa answers readers' questions in various fatwas. We at See publish these fatwas. The question says:
When does a revocable divorce become final?
Answer
A revocable divorce becomes final—in the sense that all marital relations are severed and reciprocal rights and duties such as financial support and a wife's obedience to her husband, inheritance and so forth are no longer applicable—when the wife's iddah [waiting period] ends.
Expiration of the iddah
- For a menopausal woman, the iddah ends three months after the divorce.
- For a pregnant woman, it ends after giving birth.
- For a woman who experiences menstruation, it ends after three menstrual cycles according to a number of scholars or after three intervals of purity between menstruations according to others.
