FAO Mulls over Russian Proposal to Offer Free Grain to Poor Countries

Oleg Kobyakov, director of the Department of Communication with Russia at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said that the organization is studying Moscow's proposal to supply half a million tons of grain free of charge to poor countries.

The Russian representative of the (FAO) added in an interview with the "Novosti" agency: "I assure you that the proposal of the Russian authorities, including the United Nations, has been heard."

Kobyakov noted, "Work is currently in full swing at the United Nations in the field of studying and researching this issue, because the grain deal, as well as the implementation of the memorandum signed by Russia with the United Nations, falls under the personal supervision of the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths and the Director-General. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Rebecca Greenspan.
