Sudan is facing a severe food crisis, as a result of which famine has been declared in a number of parts of the country, which increases the suffering of the Sudanese people due to the flames of war and food shortages.
Fears that the humanitarian crisis will worsen are increasing as the fighting continues and the war in the country between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces turns into a bloody war and ceasefire efforts falter in a war since April 2023 that has claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people, according to statistics announced by the World Health Organization last October.
The UN Security Council is holding a briefing session on food insecurity in Sudan, in light of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the country due to the Sudanese war, after the Global Hunger Observatory announced at the end of last December that the scope of famine in Sudan had expanded to 5 regions and is likely to extend to five other regions by May.
According to a United Nations report, Sudan faces the worst levels of acute food insecurity, with more than half of the population - 25.6 million people - expected to face “crisis” level or worse conditions due to the continuing war in the country.
