Chelsea have been fined £150,000 by the Football Association following an incident in which a bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa bench at the end of a Premier League match in December.
The incident occurred after Aston Villa’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory at Stamford Bridge, sealed by two late goals from Ollie Watkins that triggered jubilant celebrations among the visiting side.
In the aftermath of the final whistle, a plastic water bottle was thrown from the technical area in the direction of Villa’s bench.
Chelsea accepted an FA misconduct charge for breaching Rule E20.1, having failed to ensure that players or other relevant personnel behaved appropriately after the match.
The FA stated that the conduct was “improper and/or provocative and/or abusive.”
An independent FA regulatory commission imposed the fine following a hearing on 19 January.
In its written reasons, the commission said video footage showed the bottle being thrown and described the act as “dangerous,” noting that it could have provoked a reaction from Aston Villa staff.
However, the commission also confirmed that despite investigations, neither the FA nor Chelsea were able to identify the individual responsible for throwing the bottle.
Chelsea, who are currently sixth in the Premier League, retain the right to appeal the decision in accordance with FA rules and regulations.
