Tahajjud is the night prayer performed in the depths of the night. It is a voluntary prayer through which a Muslim seeks closeness to God Almighty.
It is a Sunnah (recommended practice) based on the Prophet Muhammad's (peace and blessings be upon him) practice of it, as God Almighty commanded him to pray at night in Surah Al-Muzzammil.
The time for Tahajjud begins after the Isha prayer, the last prayer a Muslim performs at night, and continues until just before the Fajr prayer.
The best time for this prayer is the middle of the night, specifically the last third.
Among its benefits are drawing closer to God, sincerity, earning reward and blessings, and having one's supplications answered.
It is a voluntary prayer, and there is no fixed number of rak'ahs. It is said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray eleven rak'ahs.
During Tahajjud prayer, it is recommended to recite aloud to avoid disturbing the worshippers. However, it is also permissible to recite silently.
