Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye issued an official apology after the dramatic incident that occurred during his team’s Premier League match against Manchester United, which Everton won 1–0 on Monday evening despite playing most of the match with ten men.

The match witnessed an unusual moment of tension when Gueye got into an argument with his teammate Michael Keane after one of Manchester United’s counterattacks.

Gueye slapped Keane, an action spotted by the referee, who showed him a red card in the 13th minute, putting his team in a difficult situation early in the match.

After the match ended, Gueye broke his silence with a clear apology posted on his Instagram account. He posted that he wanted to apologize to his teammate Michael Keane. He also added that he takes full responsibility for my reaction and apologizes to his teammates, the coaching staff, the fans, and the club.

The Senegalese midfielder added that what happened does not represent him, explaining: “My behavior does not reflect my character or my values. I was emotional, but that is no excuse for what I did. I will work hard to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

Despite the early red card, Everton managed to secure three valuable points at Old Trafford with a 1–0 victory.
