The European playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with four nations securing qualification after a series of tightly contested matches.
The Turkish national football team booked their place with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Kosovo national football team, thanks to a decisive goal from Kerem Aktürkoğlu in the 53rd minute.
In another thrilling encounter, the Sweden national football team edged past the Poland national football team 3-2, with Viktor Gyökeres scoring a late winner in the 88th minute to send his side through.
The Czech Republic national football team also advanced after a dramatic clash with the Denmark national football team ended 2-2 following extra time. The Czechs held their nerve to win 3-1 on penalties.
Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for the Italy national football team, who were eliminated after losing 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The result means Italy will miss a third consecutive World Cup, extending a disappointing run for one of Europe’s traditional powers.
Following their qualification, the teams have been allocated into their respective groups. The Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team will compete in Group B alongside Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.
Turkey have been placed in Group D with the United States, Paraguay, and Australia, while Sweden will feature in Group F against the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.
The Czech Republic join Group A, where they will face Mexico, South Korea, and South Africa, as the tournament lineup for the expanded World Cup is now complete.
