The member states of the European Union have agreed on a new law to tighten restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions from heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses.
The new law will expand the rules governing emissions from heavy-duty freight trucks to include city buses and trailers.
The new law mandates an average reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from large vehicles by 45% by 2030, 65% by 2035, and 90% by 2040, compared to 2019 levels.
City buses must emit no carbon dioxide emissions at all by 2040 and achieve a 90% reduction target by 2030.
The decision, reached by relevant ministers in the member states today, marks the final step.
The European Commission is expected to assess the law's impact by 2027.
