On Saturday, the European Union (EU) member states regretted the escalation of fighting in Libya despite international calls for a humanitarian truce to contain the pandemic coronavirus in the country.

According to the statement of the High Representative Josep Borrell, on behalf of the European Union toward the situation in Libya; he urged the Libyan parties to stop the fighting in Tripoli and throughout the country, condemned any attack on the civilian population.

"We urge all Libyan parties concerned to stop the fighting immediately and to engage in a political solution to resolve the conflict," he said.

The leadership of the parties should abide by the draft ceasefire agreement stated by the Joint Military Commission ( "the 5 + 5") in Geneva talks facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya that priority is given at the moment for ways to contain the spread of Coronavirus.

EU also condemned the use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes, calling on all Libyan parties to respect human rights and international law.

The European Union urged in its statement also to respect the cease-fire truce to protect the Libyan population and the most vulnerable groups in the country, including displaced Libyans, as well as migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

It also strongly praised the Libyan health authorities' effort for helping the Libyan citizens and the protection of health workers at all times.

"We call on all Member States of the United Nations once again to respect and support of the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations next to stop the flow of foreign fighters to Libya, refrain from acts of sabotage that undermine stability and security and exacerbate the deteriorating situation in the country." the statement added.

"All Libyan parties must be engaged constructively in the talks to reach an agreement on the implementation of urgent economic and financial measures, including the review of the Central Bank of Libya and the accounts of its branch in the east," it noted.

Regarding Libyan oil resources, the EU urged to protect its infrastructure in full compliance with the UN Security Council resolutions. He also said that oil production should be resumed under the auspices of the National Oil Corporation urgently and should be distributed fairly in all Libyan regions and for the benefit of all Libyans.
