The European Union has introduced a new automated border control system that will require non-EU travelers to provide fingerprints and a photo upon entry.

The initiative, which begins its first phase on Sunday, aims to replace manual passport stamping and improve information-sharing among member states.

Under the new Entry/Exit System, travelers entering EU countries, except Ireland and Cyprus, must submit their passport number, fingerprints, and a facial image at border checkpoints. The rule will also apply to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Major nations such as France and Germany will initially conduct limited checks to prevent long queues at airports, while smaller EU states will fully implement the system from Sunday. All countries must complete registration of arrivals by mid-April.

The European Commission stated that awareness campaigns will support the rollout, stressing that the system will enhance security and help reduce illegal migration.

A second phase of the project is planned for 2026, introducing a digital travel authorisation known as ETIAS.
