The European Border Agency, "Frontex", has revealed a huge increase in illegal immigration rates to European Union (EU) countries over the past year, according to Sky News.
The agency stated that the numbers reached the highest level since 2016, an increase of about 64 percent from what they were in 2021.
Women constituted 10 percent of the infiltrators and asylum seekers, while minor children accounted for about 9 percent.
As for the nationalities of asylum seekers, the Syrians topped the list, as their number reached about 100,000.
Immigrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Tunisia constituted the vast majority, at 47%.
The Ukraine crisis exacerbated the refugee crisis and pushed large numbers of Ukrainians towards Western countries.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has registered about 5 million people seeking temporary protection, mainly in the eastern part of the European Union, such as Poland, Romania, the Baltic states and Slovakia.
