The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Monday, expressing the EU’s concern that the region could face a fate similar to that of Mogadishu, Somalia.
Speaking during a press conference at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, Borrell voiced support for ongoing diplomatic efforts by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar to resolve the escalating crisis. "What is happening in Gaza is horrific, a grave violation of human rights," Borrell stated.
Borrell emphasized that the crisis in Gaza is man-made, not a natural disaster, stressing the urgency of international intervention. "This is not a crisis that just happened by itself. It was created by human actions," he said, adding that while the situation began with attacks by Hamas—actions the EU strongly condemns—the subsequent retaliatory actions cannot be justified.
