The European Union has expressed strong appreciation for the rapid development and modernization of Egypt’s Damietta Port, highlighting its growing role as a regional logistics gateway and a key node in Mediterranean-EU trade flows.

During an official visit on Wednesday, the EU Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst toured the port facilities and reviewed ongoing infrastructure and operational projects aimed at expanding capacity and improving efficiency.

She was received by senior officials from the Egyptian port authority, who presented an overview of the port’s strategic development plans and its integration into Egypt’s broader vision to become a regional transport and logistics hub.

Egyptian officials emphasized that Damietta Port is a cornerstone of the country’s maritime modernization strategy.

The port is undergoing extensive upgrades, including digital transformation initiatives, expansion of terminal capacity, and adoption of environmentally sustainable “green port” technologies designed to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.

During the visit, the EU delegation was briefed on flagship projects such as the “Tahya Misr 1” container terminal, one of the largest ongoing infrastructure developments at the port, along with the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) shipping line connecting Damietta with the Italian port of Trieste.

Officials said the Ro-Ro corridor has become a strategic trade link supporting Egyptian exports to European markets, particularly agricultural products, by significantly reducing transit times and improving supply chain reliability.

The delegation also witnessed the departure of voyage number 74 on the Ro-Ro route, underscoring the growing operational maturity of the maritime corridor between Egypt and Europe.

At the container terminal, representatives from the operating company provided an overview of the facility’s advanced technological systems and high-capacity handling infrastructure. The terminal is designed to handle up to 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually, with deep-water berths reaching 18 meters and a total yard area of approximately 922,000 square meters.

EU officials described the ongoing transformation as a clear reflection of Egypt’s ambition to strengthen its logistics competitiveness and attract global shipping lines, while deepening economic integration with European markets.

The visit concluded with remarks praising the scale and pace of development at the port, with the EU delegation noting that the projects underway demonstrate a strong foundation for enhanced Egypt–EU cooperation in transport, trade facilitation, and sustainable infrastructure development across the Mediterranean region.
