The European Union has announced a new allocation of €160 million to address urgent humanitarian needs in Ukraine this winter.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the funds will come from the frozen Russian assets and will be directed towards aiding Ukraine in coping with the severe impacts of the ongoing conflict, especially as winter approaches.
This decision follows ongoing efforts by the EU to support Ukraine through both military and humanitarian aid.
In addition to financial support, von der Leyen revealed plans to transfer an energy facility from Lithuania to Ukraine.
The facility will be dismantled in Lithuania and rebuilt in Ukraine to help restore the country's energy infrastructure, which has been severely damaged during the war. About 80% of Ukraine's thermal power plants have been destroyed, and the EU aims to help restore 2.6 gigawatts of electricity, representing 15% of Ukraine's energy needs.
