Yesterday, the European Union (EU) foreign policy, chief Josep Borrell,  accused Russia of committing a war crime by preventing the export of millions of tons of Ukrainian grain. This came as the bloc’s foreign ministers met to discuss means of liberating Ukrainian grain amid a global food crisis.

Ukraine is one of the largest exporters of wheat in the world, but its exports have stopped and more than 20 million tons of grain have remained in silos since the Russian invasion in February, which caused the closure of Ukrainian ports.

Russia denies responsibility for the food crisis and blames it on Western sanctions imposed on Moscow.

This war led to a jump in global food prices and the issuance of warnings from the United Nations (UN) of starvation in the poorest countries that depend heavily on imported grains.

Borrell called on Russia to open up the Black Sea routes needed to export any large amounts of Ukrainian grain.
