On Sunday, the Ethiopian ambassador to Egypt, Marcos Tekele, revealed his country’s intention to close its embassy in Cairo starting next October, for reasons related to the economic situation in his country.
In press statements, Takli said that it was decided to suspend the work of the embassy in Cairo for financial and economic reasons and to reduce the costs of managing the embassy, explaining that the period of closing the embassy will extend between 3 to 6 months.
He stressed that the closure of the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo is not related to the crisis of the Renaissance Dam currently taking place between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan, adding that the embassy’s commissioner is the one who will manage it and take care of Ethiopian interests in Cairo during the period of suspension of the embassy’s work.
Ethiopia’s closure of its embassy in Cairo comes within the framework of a plan to close its embassies in about 30 countries due to the economic and material conditions, and among these countries were: Algeria, Morocco and Kuwait, but Addis Ababa did not cut its diplomatic relations with any of these countries.
