Ethiopia: Chinese FM Wang Yi Visits Addis Ababa

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has arrived in Ethiopia for an official visit and stressed that his country will not interfere in Ethiopia's internal affairs.

Wang added that China opposes any interference by foreign powers in the conflict in Ethiopia.

This came on Wednesday during a meeting with Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen in the capital Addis Ababa.

Wang also called for dialogue, a truce and a political solution to the crisis between the conflicting parties in Ethiopia. He said China is ready to help the African country restore peace on the basis of respecting Ethiopia's sovereignty.

Mekonnen praised China's position of non-interference, saying that the Ethiopian government is still making efforts to find a political solution to the conflict. He added that "Addis Ababa opposes any external forces that interfere in its internal affairs in the name of democracy and human rights."

He said the Ethiopian government will also protect Chinese nationals living in the country, to make sure no interference with their residency and work.
