Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme has officially entered the race for the presidency of Real Madrid, becoming the first major challenger to current president Florentino Perez ahead of the club’s early elections.

The 37-year-old entrepreneur is one of the leading figures in the renewable energy and infrastructure sector, earning the nickname “King of the Sun” for his major investments in solar energy projects across Europe and Latin America.

Riquelme reportedly meets all the financial and membership requirements needed to run for the presidency, including the club’s massive financial guarantee estimated at €187 million.

Perez had previously hinted at Riquelme’s possible candidacy, but the businessman has now officially submitted his nomination papers at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas headquarters, setting up a high-profile battle for control of the Spanish giants.
