South Texas has made its decision in favor of Elon Musk, with a landslide vote to approve the proposal to establish Starbase as a city.

According to preliminary results released by the local election commission, 173 people voted to 4 in favor of establishing the city, which houses SpaceX's rocket launch site and headquarters. Voters also approved the city's first-ever city council, composed entirely of current or former employees of the company, all of whom ran unopposed.

Starbase is located within an area of just 1.45 square miles and is populated almost entirely by SpaceX employees and their families. The area has become reminiscent of a science fiction movie, thanks to its advanced manufacturing facilities, carefully arranged identical homes, and a massive statue of Musk.

While the city's creation does not give Musk absolute power, it provides regulatory tools that allow the company to control the pace of development, including urban planning and construction decisions.

Seven years ago, SpaceX completely reshaped Boca Chica, a once sleepy retirement community, into a bustling production center for the Starship rocket, the vehicle Musk hopes will one day take humans to Mars.

But the company still faces a major obstacle: a housing crisis. A project to build new homes failed to secure county approval, and about 260 employees live in the area with their families, bringing the total population to about 500. More than 3,000 employees commute daily from Brownsville or nearby areas.
