Electricity Minister Discusses Cooperation with Cypriot Amb.

On Monday, Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, received Homer Mavromatis, Ambassador of Cyprus in Cairo, to follow up on the developments of the electrical interconnection project between the two countries.

Shaker welcomed Mavrommatis, praising the depth of the distinguished Egyptian-Cypriot relations. He stressed the interest that the political leadership and the Egyptian government, represented in the electricity and energy sector, attach to strength the bonds of cooperation between the two countries.

The minister praised the efforts made to complete the necessary studies for the interconnection project. He confirmed that this historic project is of great importance to Egypt’s strategic plan in order to achieve economic development. He said that this project is one of the projects that help connect Egypt to the European electrical network. Thus, Egypt will be an important carrier of energy for Europe.

He also stressed the interest that the electricity and renewable energy sector attaches to electrical interconnection projects so that Egypt becomes a regional center for energy exchange with Europe and Arab and African countries.

Shaker explained that the implementation of the linkage project enhances the partnership between the two countries. He pointed out that it will help to achieve advantages for the two countries, taking into account the recent developments in the electricity and energy sector and the increase in available capabilities.

Shaker confirmed the interest in, quickly, completing the electrical linkage project between Egypt and Cyprus, and from there to Greece and then to the rest of Europe.

On his part, the Cypriot ambassador praised the distinguished political relations that link the two countries. He underscored the need to support and strengthen those relations.

Mavromatis confirmed the Cypriot government's interest in the project of linking the two countries because of the great importance of this project in achieving economic and political benefits for the countries concerned.
