Electricity Minister Announces New Hikes in Electricity Bills

Egypt's Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker announced in a press conference on Tuesday new increases in electricity prices along seven tiers of consumption, at an overall average of 19.1%, for the fiscal year 2020/2021, which starts in July.

During the conference, the minister revealed that the government has extended the plan to phase out electricity subsidies for another three years.

The new prices will take effect in July.

The new rates of increases in electric bills for the fiscal year 2020/2021 are as listed below:

First tier: 0-50 Kilowatt - from 30 piastres to 38

Second tier: 51-100 Kilowatt - 40 piastres to 48

Third tier: 0-200 Kilowatt - 50 piastres to 65

Fourth tier: 201-350 Kilowatt - 82 piastres to 96

Fifth tier: 351-651 Kilowatt - 100 piasters to 118

Thixh tier: 651-1000 Kilowatt - 140 piasters

Seventh tier: More than 1000 kilowatts - don’t receive any subsidy, and is charged 145 piasters.
