Egypt’s Supreme Council of Universities (SCU) has launched a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting energy conservation across universities and higher education institutes, in a move designed to address mounting global energy challenges and encourage sustainable practices among young people.
Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said the initiative seeks to reduce energy consumption within academic institutions while empowering students to act as ambassadors of energy awareness within their households and communities.
In televised remarks, Abdel Ghaffar noted that the campaign targets approximately four million students, in addition to around half a million faculty members and administrative staff. The initiative will rely on a mix of direct outreach and digital awareness tools, alongside student-led competitions and activities aimed at generating innovative ideas to promote energy-saving practices.
“The goal extends beyond universities and institutes,” he said, emphasizing that the campaign is designed to reach millions of Egyptian families through student engagement and community interaction.
The campaign also focuses on enhancing youth participation in spreading a culture of energy conservation through volunteer and social activities, as well as the use of social media platforms to broaden its impact.
Abdel Ghaffar added that growing public engagement with the initiative would support the state’s broader efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the global energy crisis and promote more efficient energy use nationwide.
