Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics has announced a decrease of 8% in population growth in 2023 compared to the previous year. As of January 1, 2024, Egypt's total population reached 105.858 million, which is an increase of 1.463 million from the same period in the previous year, where the population was 104.395 million.
The agency has attributed the decline in population growth to a decrease in the number of births in 2023 compared to 2022. According to preliminary data, the number of births in 2023 was 2.044 million, which is a decline of approximately 149,000 from the previous year's births, which were 2.93 million.
Egypt is currently the most populous country in the Middle East and the third most populous in Africa, as per the World Bank. This latest update puts further pressure on Egypt's struggling economy, which has already been hit hard by inflation rates of over 30 percent in the past year, leading to a drastic decline in living standards.
