On Tuesday, Egypt's Minister of Health and Population and Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang held a joint press conference a few hours after Egypt received a gift shipment carrying 300,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines from Beijing, raising its supply of the Chinese vaccine to 350,000 doses.
Minister Zayed stated that registration to get vaccinated will resume online Sunday, February 28 for citizens aged above 40, and those suffering from chronic diseases. The minister added that the vaccination process will take place at 40 venues across the 27 governorates.
The step “comes within the framework of enhancing means of cooperation between the two brotherly countries to combat the novel coronavirus,” according to the Ministry of Health.
During the press conference, Zayed explained that the citizens who can't get access to the website, which the ministry launched recently, can head to the nearest hospital to register their date so that they can be administered the shots.
On the other hand, Liqiang said that the shipment is a symbolic gift that expresses China's support to Egypt, adding that "we are returning a favor to Egypt."
In January 2021, the EDA approved the emergency use of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine.
In the same context, Egypt has already vaccinated hundreds of medical workers at isolation and triage hospitals nationwide as the first step of its vaccination campaign began in mid-January.
It's worth noting that the campaign depends on the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, alongside the British-Swedish Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
