The implementation of the Egyptian government’s decision to ban the export of onions began on Sunday, which will continue for three months, according to the Official Gazette.

The decision came after onion prices reached record levels, with the price of a kilo exceeding 25 pounds, even though at the beginning of the season it did not exceed more than 10 pounds.

Taking into account controlling prices in the markets and relieving the burden on the citizen, the Cabinet decided last September to issue an export ban, which will continue until December 31, 2023.

According to the report of the Chamber’s Vegetables and Fruits Division, the Cabinet's approval to stop the export of onions will lead to a decline in their prices during the coming period, especially with the entry of new production groups that will increase the supply of onions in the market.

Egypt ranks fourth in the world in onion production, with total quantities exceeding 3.2 million tons, behind India, China and the United States, according to data from the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture.

Egypt annually cultivates areas of onions approaching 200,000 feddans, and onion exports during the past year approached 470,000 tons.
