Egypt's ambassador to Washington, Motaz Zahran said that Libya has become a major threat to the Egyptian national security at the present time.

In press statements, Zahran added: "Throughout history, the threat to Egypt was not coming from the West, but because of the chaos in Libya, we have paid major attention to reaching a political settlement. We are aware that there is no military solution to the internal conflict in Libya."

Zahran stressed that Egypt supports peace efforts in Libya and the understanding of the conflicting parties at the military, political, and legal levels, saying: "We play a major role in this field."

The ambassador noted that when President Abdel Fattah El Sisi announced that there was a red line at Sirte and Jufrah, it was in fact a call for peace because this red line means that there should be no incursion from the East against the West and vice versa.

He added that Egypt is still concerned about the continuous external interference in Libyan affairs. Egypt has called on all foreign parties in Libya to leave it because their presence has exacerbated the situation, especially since there are extremist and terrorist militias in Libya. These militias are supported by regional parties.

The ambassador went on saying that when the United States decided to turn its attention more towards Asia because of its fatigue with the Middle East region and its various conflicts, it left a vacuum in the region, which was filled by regional and external parties.
