Cairo giants Al Ahly has been handed a place in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as FIFA has announced the new 32-team format of the competition.

The FIFA council meeting that took place in Rwanda on Tuesday revealed radical changes to the newly-formatted FIFA Club World Cup that will witness the participation of 32 teams, replacing the current format that sees just seven clubs battle out for the title.

The revamped FIFA Club World Cup will take place every four years starting from 2025 as FIFA revealed the qualifying criteria for the tournament.

The allocations of the new FIFA Club World Cup will be as follows: 12 clubs from Europe, 4 from Africa, 4 from South America, 4 from North America, 4 from Asia, 1 from Oceania, and 1 from the host nation.

“For confederations with four slots, the champions of the four preceding confederation’s Champions League editions will be given a direct entry to the 2025 FIFA Club World,” FIFA’s statement read on their official website.

This means that Al Ahly will be guaranteed a spot in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as the winners of the 2021 CAF Champions League after beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 in the final.

The 2022 champions, Wydad Casablanca, and the 2023 and 2024 champions will complete the quadrate that will represent Africa in the competition.

This year’s FIFA Club World Cup will take place in Saudi Arabia between December 12-22.
