On Thursday, the Egyptian security forces foiled a suicide bombing attempt by a terrorist against personnel stationed at a police checkpoint in El-Telol district in North Sinai.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said that the security personnel killed the terrorist after an exchange of fire, noted the statement, adding that an explosive belt, two grenades, an automatic weapon, four magazines, and 112 bullets were found in his possession.

The ministry said all legal measures have been taken and that the country's Supreme State Security Prosecution is investigating the incident.

In the past several years, Egypt has been battling terrorists in North Sinai, who carried out deadly attacks on police and Armed Forces checkpoints as well as civilians.

However, in 2018, the Armed Forces launched a major counter-terrorist drive dubbed “Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018” that succeeded in almost eradicating terrorism from North Sinai as well as the Nile Delta and desert areas.

As a result, the rate of terrorist attacks in North Sinai has declined in recent years following massive and successive security and military anti-terror operations.

The Egyptian Armed forces has foiled two terrorist attacks this month.

On 7 May, the army thwarted an attack launched by a group of terrorists on a water lifting station in western Sinai, which left an officer and 10 soldiers dead as well as five others injured.
