Egyptian security forces have thwarted one of the largest illegal gold-mining operations in Upper Egypt after investigations by the Public Security Sector, in coordination with other Ministry of Interior agencies, revealed a criminal gang of 25 individuals — including eight foreign nationals — involved in illegal gold exploration and the operation of quartz-grinding mills in the mountainous desert area near Qus in Qena Governorate.

According to investigations, the gang managed several milling sites used to crush quartz rocks extracted from illegal mining locations in an attempt to recover gold.

Following legal procedures, security forces, backed by Central Security units, raided the sites. Upon detecting the approaching forces, gang members opened fire on officers, prompting an exchange that resulted in the death of one suspect and the arrest of the remaining members.

Authorities seized a large cache of weapons and equipment, including an RPG launcher, two heavy machine guns, 10 automatic rifles, and substantial quantities of ammunition of various calibers. Officers also confiscated approximately two kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (“shabu”), as well as large sums of local and foreign currency.

In addition, security forces seized and dismantled 13 grinding mills used in processing gold-bearing quartz, along with an excavator, seven transport trucks, seven unlicensed motorcycles, and various tools and equipment used in the illegal mining activities.

Officials estimated the total value of the seized items at around EGP 50 million. Legal action has been taken, while security authorities continue efforts to combat illegal gold mining activities across desert regions.
