The Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations, Osama Mahmoud Abdel Khalek, announced that Egypt has successfully secured a position in the UN Human Rights Committee for the term spanning from 2025 to 2028 and Ambassador Wafa Basim will serve as Egypt's representative in the Committee.
Abdel Khalek highlighted that the elections were held to renew the membership of nine out of the 16 members of the Committee, with 26 countries vying for these nine seats in a highly competitive election.
The selection process involves voting by UN members in the General Assembly of the United Nations who are signatories to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (199 countries). The Human Rights Committee is responsible for monitoring and assessing the performance of states that are party to the International Covenant in terms of fulfilling their human rights obligations.
Egypt's Permanent Representative to the UN emphasized that Egypt's successful bid for a seat in this significant UN Committee demonstrates the international community's trust in Egypt and its commitment to upholding human rights on a global scale.
