Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty urged continued diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran during a phone conversation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

The discussions focused on regional developments, nuclear non-proliferation efforts and ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at reducing tensions in the region, according to a ministry statement.

Abdelatty affirmed the importance of sustaining diplomatic channels and dialogue to support regional stability and address concerns related to Iran's nuclear program through peaceful means.

During the call, the Egyptian foreign minister reviewed the outcomes of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York from April 27 to May 22.

Abdelatty expressed regret that the conference failed to reach consensus on a final document, while emphasizing that previous review conference outcomes remain valid and continue to serve as important references for the international community.

He highlighted the significance of the 1995 resolution calling for the establishment of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction, describing it as a key pillar of regional and international security efforts.

The minister reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and described the NPT as the cornerstone of international efforts aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and advancing nuclear disarmament.

Abdelatty also underscored the need for universal adherence to the treaty, particularly in the Middle East, as part of broader efforts to promote regional security, stability and confidence-building measures.
