Ambassador Amr Aljowaily, Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, held consultations with the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions, Alexander Zuev, with the participation of members of the National Peacekeeping Mechanism from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Interior.
Aljowaily stated that the consultations, which came in the context of the UN official's visit to Cairo, focused on addressing the main UN peace and security processes for 2025, most notably the review of the UN peacebuilding structure on the one hand and the ministerial meetings dedicated to discussing the future and models of peacekeeping on the other hand. The Assistant Foreign Minister highlighted the launch of a series of events celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, in addition to the 65th anniversary of Egypt's first participation in UN peacekeeping operations in the Congo in 1960. “This global role complements Egypt's activity at the regional level as it hosts the African Union Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development, as well as in capacity building through the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding”, he added.
For his part, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations praised Egypt's pioneering participation in UN peacekeeping operations, which have cumulatively exceeded 30,000 military and police peacekeepers who participated in more than 37 missions around the world. He highlighted the growing trend towards strengthening the police component within multidimensional missions, cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations, and the comprehensive concept of UN peace operations.
