Egypt is expected to see the construction of one of the world's largest wind farms by March 2026, as grueling power outages over the summer highlight the North African country's energy needs.

According to Al Sharq Bloomberg, Mohamed Mansour, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Infinity Power revealed the massive onshore project, with a price tag exceeding $10 billion, is set to commence electricity generation in 2032.

Although the construction of the 10-GW project was initially planned to begin this year, it faced delays due to the land acquisition process in the West Sohag region of Upper Egypt, as mentioned by Mansour in an interview.

Egypt is facing an urgent need to secure new energy sources, as the country has been grappling with regular power outages for approximately a year. The government has been struggling to provide electricity to a population of over 105 million people, especially with rising temperatures and other challenges.

Despite having significant offshore gas fields and being a major exporter to Europe, Egypt has had to resort to imports this year, with liquefied natural gas purchases expected to reach their highest level since 2018.

In an effort to address the issue of power cuts during the summer, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced on Tuesday that the government has allocated $1.2 billion for additional energy imports, including heavy fuel oil.

The anticipated electricity generation from the Sohag wind farm will be advantageous for Egypt, as the country aims to decommission some of its gas-fired power plants and increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy mix to 42% by 2030.
